Sound Healing
Our days are filled with lots of little stresses and a distinct lack of corresponding releases. Extra meetings. Painful political blows. Bickering with family. Aches and heartaches no one can see. The noise of the world, both literal and emotional, fill us up like a balloon, making us tight and tired. Sound has a unique power to create an opening in you, through which stress and irritation can flow out (and maybe make some funny noises on the way out). I know there is a song that you can’t resist dancing to, and when you put it on and move, you feel lighter afterwards. Or a song that immediately evokes an important chapter of your life. There not only songs but powerful sounds that release long-dammed tears of grief, give a place for anger to land, tap into deep pleasure, and so much more.
The field of neuroaesthetics, a branch of neuroscience that documents exactly how expressive experiences affect health, is currently quantifying what artists, Tibetan monks, and shamanic healers have known for centuries: creating and receiving art makes us healthier (if you are curious about this field, read or listen to Your Brain on Art). Sound is literally medicine.
The sounds you will be bathed in during a session or circle are like a mother humming to her child. Simple, gentle, grounded and deep, sound can remind your body it can surrender tension to the cradling earth or invite you into movement. Through sound, the body communicates with greater ease and participates more readily in healing.
Sound also creates a bridge into imaginative dialog. As you listen, you might notice images rise behind closed eyes that tell non-verbal stories or awaken important memories. Sound journeys offer these and many other nuanced sensations that spark surprising and valuable insights.
If you are curious about sound healing, you may attend a community sound healing circle (make a link to sound offering page) or integrate sound into a Collaborative Coaching session. If you are already working with a dialog-based counselor or coach you like, I offer stand-alone sound sessions. Lastly, I can support you in finding and learning how to play many simple and powerful instruments. If you are new to sound healing, a good way to get a feel for it is to listen to one here.
