The Open Door Circle
A place for queer kids, their friends and family to create and connect
Ages 10–15
Thursdays, 3:30-5:30
The Open Door invites queer and questioning kids ages 10-15 to create and connect. As you paint, draw, sculpt, and craft, you may choose to share life stories with others who understand being young and queer. I bring two decades of supporting authenticity, confidence and inclusion through art. This safer space nurtures and empowers queer kids. No artistic experience necessary. Ally friends and family are welcome to attend. An art-date is a wonderful way to connect.
Each gathering begins with a simple sharing circle that helps everyone get to know each other; participants may either voice something meaningful about their week or simply listen. I hold the opening in away that models developmentally tailored social agreements rooted my work with transformative justice, non-violent communication and therapeutic arts facilitation. After the opening circle everyone digs into a pile of art supplies and creates with whatever feels most enticing; during this process, I support each person’s authenticity, self-love, and curiosity. I also offer support in navigating around common narratives that shut down creativity and confidence. These circles are a place where queer and questioning children get to be centered and make discoveries through art play. It is also a place where they get to be the majority group, something many of them do not experience.
Circles start September 12th. Registration through Parks and Rec coming soon.
